Venice BURANO ISLAND

Venice BURANO ISLAND The island of Burano is one the most beautiful places that you can visit in the lagoon of Venice.

It is located about 20 minutes away by private water taxi from Venice, and reaching it you can immediately see one the characteristics of the island: the leaning bell tower of Burano.

It is the bell tower of the church of San Martino and it leans so much that it can be seen from far away, going to Burano by water taxi.

When the water taxi approaches the island you will see all the boats of the fisherman docked along the banks and on the other side all the nets of the fisherman in the middle of the water, placed there every day for the fishing activity.

Getting off the water taxi you will see that it looks like a fairytale town, mostly because of the small houses all painted in different colors, each color represents a family.

There is a main square in Burano, called Galuppi Square, and a main street where you find all the shops and restaurants.

You will notice a lot of shops selling lace, this is one of the main production of the island.

The main activity in Burano has always been the fishing, and the women used to repair the fishing nets of their husbands. From the production of the fishing nets, in the spare time the women started to produce the lace. This production of lace grew so much and become so beautiful and important that sometimes it became the main source of income rather that the fishing activity.

You can walk around and enter one of our suggested lace lab, there the staff of the shop will show you and explain the different phases of the lace production. It is an art that takes a lot of time and a lot of skill in order to produce a piece of lace. There are only few ladies still able to work the lace and unfortunately the young girls don't want to go on with this activity anymore. It is because it takes a lot of time, a lot of skill and a strong effort because the eyes are very much used for working the lace.

If you walk around the island, in the little streets, you will take the best pictures of the corners of Burano. You will also notice that away from the main street people leave the doors of the houses open, and the entrance is covered only by a curtain, that's because most of the people on the island are relatives or very close friends and so they can enter in the houses without asking permission.
